Chemical Properties - Oxidation (cont.)
Corrosion describes the wearing down of a substance as it undergoes chemical reactions with its environment.  The best example of corrosion is the process of rusting, which is actually an oxidation reation.

When iron is exposed to water and oxygen in air, an oxidation reaction occurs to produce rust, known chemically as "iron (III) oxide."  The metal corrodes over time as more and more iron is converted into rust.

Click on the "Oxidation of an Iron Coil" resource to watch a video of iron undergoing an oxidation reaction.  Normally, the rusting process is fairly slow because oxygen makes up only 21% of air; however, the rusting process is accelerated in pure oxygen gas.  At the end of the reaction, nearly all the iron coil has corroded away because the metal was converted into rust.
